We’ve tried something like this before but didn’t see enough revenue for it to make sense. It’s under consideration for the future though.

Why not create such free widget for let say Euro 2016 soccer event then you'll see if this could work for you or at least offer such Euro 2016 free widget to draw new visitors to your commercialized widgets.
In a away you'd give 1 free widget that would only work during 1 month of Euro 2016 for people to test your widget on their websites and also for you to get more visitors and exposure.
